Great location, friendly staff. It's a Travelodge so you know exactly what you are getting..... which I like.
We arrived early at the hotel aware that check-in wasn't until 3pm, however we were still allowed to park at the hotel and go for a nosey in Newcastle before coming back to check in. When we did come back to check-in, our room wasn't ready which was fine as it was the Christmas period and the hotel had been fully booked the day before we arrived. We went through to the bar with the kids to wait and staff gave us all free drinks because we had to wait, which was a lovely surprise, although we didn't even have to wait long. We had a room with a view of the Tyne which the kids loved! The room was also spacious and had plenty of room despite 2 sofa beds being put in the room for the kids. A lovely, friendly and inviting hotel which we will come back and stay at he next time we visit Newcastle.
Good location for the quayside but an uphill walk into city centre. Parking very limited under the hotel but they have 8 more spaces nearby. They may not offer them so ask at reception as theyre free and local car parks are expensive.
I have stayed in a large number of hotels in this chain, including one where the rooms may have been hired by the night but seemed to be sublet by the hour, so I have no preconceptions. Room was clean and above the normal Travelodge standard. The view (get a room at the back, away from the busy street) was superb, looking out to the river and the High Level Bridge. The breakfast was a standard eat-as-much-as-you-like TL affair, but there is nothing wrong with that. A bit of local colour would have been nice, say some black pudding, but it is a TL.The staff make the place. Typical Geordie atmosphere,;even if one or two of them weren't actually Geordie, they have soaked up the local attitude and approach to life, which was a delight. There is one big drawback, and that is the location. Both Newcastle and Gateshead over the river sit at the top of very steep riverside banks, and the choice of ways down from the city centre are many, various and exceedingly long and steep stairways. It isn't too bad coming down...well, not TOO bad. Going back up with luggage is hard work. Still, the views and atmosphere are fine, a couple of decent places to eat and a few pubs nearby, and if you feel lazy, it's only a fiver by taxi to the Central Station or city centre. It was my friend's first visit to a city I know very well, and she wants to come back with her hubby in the Summer. Enough said.
The facilities provided by Travelodge generally are excellent for the price. Our experience at this location was particularly good. Staff were so friendly and helpful - they couldn't do enough to ensure our comfort. (Cheryl was a star.) The breakfast was super - as good as you would expect at any expensive hotel. We would always stay at a Travelodge if there was one.
