Visited as a kid & a adult theirs a good bit if history to pick on watch out the housing estates locally however as their ran with.... Anyways a good spot through the day to visit.
So much history in one area, the Romans did so much it's almost as if we are still learning from them even now! And this Roman fort it a prime example of how they were able to dominate for so long - a great experience to do as a family too..
Very nice museum with impressive presentation. I also liked the view from the tower. Within 2 minute walking you'll find remnants of the Roman baths. I later found that this area was the location also of a local shipbuilding site. All but disappeared in the seventies of the 20th century.
This place looks kinda none too impressive from the outside, but actually is really good. The viewing tower is especially great as you can see the entire layout of the fort as it is now and would be both in Roman and shipbuilding (1800's) times, plus a good view of the river.There are a number of museum galleries including things for the kids to do like trying on Roman outfits. You can also walk around the site and across the road is both a large part of the original wall and a rebuilt wall of how it would have been. There is a rebuilt bath house but it wasn't open when we went.Overall I would recommend.
We visited Segedunum on a clear, sunny morning. The views from the tower were great and we had a pleasant walk around the Roman camp and on to the reconstruction of a section of Hadrian's wall. We finished off with a look at the museum. The cafe was not open, nor was the bath house. We had an enjoyable couple of hours on the site. It is very easy to get to Segedunum from Newcastle. The visit could be part of a day trip to the coast.
