Keep this place alive by using it! Something for everyone. very polite staff, huge quality selection and wonderful place to read/relax.
I preferd the old central library, call me old fashioned but I like libraries with books and silence. This modern interpretation of a library is part creche with screaming children, plus I don't like sharing a space with the city's drug addicts. My heart goes out to any students trying to study and to general members of the public who just want some peace and quiet to read and relax.
Came here on the recommendation of my sister and wont be returning! I came here to study however didnt succeed to due feeling very uncomfortable by the amount of dirty, probably homeless creepily watching me! It seems to be a hangout space for smelly old men who think it is perfectly fine to distract others and stare at people who want to study- its such a shame as the library itself is ber modern and cool looking. Ill study at home or Whitley Bay library instead...
I never cease to be amazed at how expertly the local councils squander taxpayers money. The old library was quite adequate for the small amount of books and DVDs, CDs etc they had. However Newcastle council who clearly have money to burn (especially other peoples) built this massive state of the art airy glass building to house the same old out of date stock. I imagined they'd get loads of new up to date stuff but no such luck. They have a cafe which is OK, but Newcastle abounds with better cafes than this one and I'd be much more likely to go to them especially since this building is off the beaten track. Speaking of beating that's what should be done to the extravagant idiot who came up with this scheme.
Excellent public resource full of books/dvds/computers and local resources you can search. The shop has interesting books about local history. Cafe is lovely with helpful staff, lovely coffee and lots of food choices including gluten /dairy free options. The hand cut chips are lovely.The only downsides are the same for all public resources - difficulties keeping the toilets clean (on the ground floor) and also, without wanting to sound mean, no choice of who sits next to you. Usually it's a great place to work and read but you the most disruptive groups are the people who use it as a meeting place for chatting, whether that be the youngsters or the other groups that congregate here.A more regular clean of the toilets on the ground floor would help I think. And if you're a girl in your own, try to sit on a table with other girls to avoid being ogled.
